windmill-system.gif (48635 bytes) The windmill has been the standard for the cattle rancher to pump water for his livestock on the range or in a ranch pasture. Many people see them spinning in the distance, but how do they work?

The windmill head is a gear box that strokes a rod in the well to pump water with a windmill cylinder. Each time the wheel turns, the gears move the rod up and down to pump the water from the bottom of the well to the surface where the livestock can benefit from it. The tail on the windmill keeps the wheel positioned into the wind so that it gets the proper power to pump water.

At the bottom of the well is a well pump cylinder that is attached to steel pipe coming up to the surface of the well. The cylinder contains a bottom check valve that allows water into the cylinder from the well, then prevents it from going back out the bottom. There is also a plunger assembly that has leathers to seal against the cylinder walls, and a rod attached to the pumping rod from above. The plunger has the same through pass as the check valve. The rod comes up to the surface and connects to the bottom of a stuffing box that seals off the top of the pipe so water will not come out, and allows the water to be diverted through a tee to a stock tank. The stuffing box has packing in it to prevent water from going through it, while allowing the rod to be stroked through it with the windmill.

At the top end of the stuffing box, you will use a #62 rod to wood pole connector. This unit screws onto the rod and then bolts onto the wood pole coming down from your windmill. The wood pole coming down should be at least 14' in length. This wood pole is a safety key that will break if something becomes bound in the well, and will prevent damage to your windmill in such a case.
